What is search engine optimization?

Search engine optimization is the process of achieving top rankings in the search engines for a website's most relevant search terms. The most relevant search terms are the phrases that people are most likely to type into a search engine when looking for what the website has to offer. These are the search terms that it is essential to rank highly for, and these are the search terms that search engine optimization targets.

Why search engine optimization?

Anyone can submit a site to the search engines and it will be listed but, unless it has been optimized to perform well in the rankings, there is little chance of it being ranked anywhere near highly enough for people to find it. It simply won't be found.

Without search engine optimization, most sites and pages won't rank highly enough for people to find them. If people can't find your site, they are not going to visit it. If people don't visit your site, they certainly won't buy anything from it and all the sales will go to your competitors.

Most people don't look any further than the first 3 pages (top 30) of search results, and websites that are not listed in those first 3 pages will rarely be found. It is essential to be ranked at or near the top of the search results for your site's most relevant search terms.

The change became known as the Florida Update and it caused massive changes to the rankings. Many of the above rankings are close to where they were before the update, but some have changed.

I should point out that some of this website is devoted to search engine optimization and to what is and isn't search engine spam, and it is obvious that I find many of the techniques that some people call search engine spam to be perfectly ethical and beneficial to websites, search engines and surfers. However, when performing search engine optimization on behalf of a client, I never use any of the so-called spam techniques without the full knowledge and agreement of the client.
